What Happens When You Neglect Cleaning Your Tank?

The answer is backed by scientific research and real figures

Proliferation of Dangerous Bacteria and Microbes

Uncleaned tanks are an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria, algae, and fungi. Studies show that tanks left uncleaned for more than 6 months contain bacterial counts that exceed the safe limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO) by 10 to 100 times. A study published in the Journal of Water and Health in 2018 detected coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli (E. coli) in more than 58% of household water tanks that had not undergone regular cleaning in the Middle East and North Africa region. The same study also recorded the growth of Legionella bacteria — the cause of Legionnaires' disease, a severe pneumonia with a fatality rate of 5% to 10% — in tanks where the water temperature ranged between 20 and 45 degrees Celsius.

Serious Diseases You Don't See Until They Strike

According to the World Health Organization, diseases transmitted through contaminated water cause nearly 485,000 deaths worldwide each year from diarrhea alone — a figure higher than malaria deaths. Children under five are the most at risk, as contaminated water is among the leading causes of their deaths in the developing world. In Jordan and the wider region, epidemiological surveillance studies indicate that contamination of household water tanks contributes to 30 to 40% of reported cases of acute digestive illness in urban settings, according to the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) in 2020.

Sediment and Biofilm — A Hidden Danger at the Bottom of Your Tank

With every fill-and-drain cycle, minerals and organic particles settle at the bottom of the tank, forming a layer of solid sediment. Over time, this sediment builds up into what is scientifically known as "biofilm" — a sticky bacterial film that shields microbes from ordinary chlorine disinfection and is difficult to remove with water alone. Research published in Water Research in 2019 proves that biofilm protects pathogenic bacteria more than 1,000 times more effectively than free-floating bacteria in water, making typical chlorine doses unable to eliminate them. On top of that, rust in metal tanks releases iron and manganese ions into the water, causing changes in its color and taste and damaging household appliances.

Silent Chemical Contamination — Microplastics

Plastic tanks exposed to ultraviolet rays and heat without regular maintenance gradually degrade, releasing microplastics into drinking water. A study published in Environmental Science & Technology in 2020 revealed the presence of microplastics in 83% of tap water samples taken from tanks that had not undergone regular maintenance. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified some plastic degradation compounds as potentially carcinogenic. Furthermore, tanks exposed to light promote the growth of blue-green algae that produce natural toxins (cyanotoxins) which cause liver and nervous system inflammation.
