Cleaning Your Tank or Sanitizing It? The Difference That Could Save Your Family’s Health

When you ask to "clean" your tank, do you mean cleaning or sanitizing? Many people use the two words interchangeably without knowing that each is a completely different process with different goals.

What Is Cleaning?

Cleaning is the mechanical process of removing visible dirt: sediment, algae, and the layers accumulated on the walls and floor. It’s done by scrubbing, scraping, and pressure-washing. Afterward, the tank looks clean and there’s no sediment — but microscopic bacteria may still be present.

What Is Sanitizing?

Sanitizing is the chemical process that kills microorganisms — bacteria, fungi, and viruses — that are invisible to the naked eye. It uses approved chlorine solutions or other disinfectants licensed by the Ministry of Health.

Why Isn’t One Alone Enough?

• Cleaning without sanitizing: a tank that looks clean but contains active bacteria
• Sanitizing without cleaning: chemicals don’t penetrate thick sediment layers efficiently
• The correct order: clean first to remove the layers, then sanitize to eliminate germs

Imagine sanitizing a dirty kitchen without cleaning it first — the disinfectant won’t reach the surface beneath the greasy layer. The tank is exactly the same.

When Do You Need Cleaning Only?

If the last thorough cleaning was only 3 months ago, and there are no changes in the water’s color or smell, a light cleaning may suffice. But after 6 months, or at any warning sign, you must combine cleaning with full sanitization.

What About New Tanks?

A new tank needs sanitizing before first use, because it may contain residue from manufacturing and installation materials. This is a step many people skip, filling the tank with water right away.
