What Happens When You Neglect Your Tank?
The answer is backed by scientific research and real numbers
Dangerous Bacterial & Microbial Growth
Uncleaned water tanks are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria, algae, and fungi. Studies show that tanks not cleaned for more than 6 months contain bacterial counts exceeding WHO safety limits by 10 to 100 times. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Water and Health detected coliform bacteria and E. coli in more than 58% of household water tanks in the MENA region that had not undergone regular cleaning. The same study identified Legionella bacteria — the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of pneumonia with a 5–10% fatality rate — growing in tanks with water temperatures between 20°C and 45°C.

Serious Diseases You Won't See Coming
According to the World Health Organization, waterborne diseases transmitted through contaminated water cause approximately 485,000 deaths annually from diarrhea alone — a figure higher than malaria-related deaths. Children under five are the most vulnerable group, with contaminated water ranking among the leading causes of child mortality worldwide. At the regional level, epidemiological surveillance studies indicate that household water tank contamination contributes to 30–40% of acute gastrointestinal illness cases reported in urban settings, as published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) in 2020.

Biofilm & Sediment — The Hidden Threat at the Bottom
With each fill-and-drain cycle, minerals and organic particles settle at the bottom of the tank, forming a layer of hard sediment. Over time, this sediment develops into what scientists call a "Biofilm" — a sticky bacterial membrane that shields microbes from standard chlorination and cannot be removed by water alone. Research published in Water Research Journal in 2019 demonstrates that biofilm protects pathogenic bacteria with over 1,000 times greater efficiency compared to free-floating bacteria, rendering standard chlorine concentrations ineffective. Additionally, rust in metal tanks releases iron and manganese ions into the water, altering its color and taste while damaging household appliances.

Silent Chemical Contamination — Microplastics in Your Water
Plastic tanks exposed to UV radiation and heat without regular maintenance gradually degrade, releasing microscopic plastic particles (Microplastics) into drinking water. A 2020 study published in Environmental Science & Technology found microplastics in 83% of tap water samples taken from tanks that had not undergone regular maintenance. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified some plastic degradation compounds as potential carcinogens. Furthermore, tanks exposed to sunlight promote the growth of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that produce natural toxins (Cyanotoxins) which cause liver inflammation and nervous system damage.
